Hong Kong vs Filipina domestic helper's bid for permanent residency
written on @ 11:59 AM ?

Domestic Helpers
Hong Kong gears up for the latest labour case. A Filipina tries her bid to win a permanent residency in Hong Kong. A Filipina domestic helper launched a case when her attempt to be a legal permanent resident has been denied even though she has been living in Hong Kong since 1986.

Under Hong Kong law, a non-citizen can file for a permanent residency if they have stayed in  the country for seven consecutive years. They will be entitled to voting and have permanent access to public services. Unfortunately every non-citizen with different jobs are entitled to this benefit expect foreign domestic workers.

Hong Kong is considered on top of the domestic helpers chain and is better off their counterparts which include Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Japan where their salaries are lower. In Malaysia domestic helpers are often abused and mistreated. The case is up for debate.

Pro's for domestic helpers to get permanent residency
1) They will have human rights
2) This gives Hong Kong a status and show's that they equality in the country
3) Healthy ties between nations.

Con's for domestic helpers to set permanent residency
1) This will increase the number of domestic helpers coming into Hong Kong which mean they are entitled to bring their families and this would increase in costs for Hong Kong.
2) Hong Kong might change their laws and shortened the number of years of service for a domestic helper so that they could not apply for a permanent residency.

In my opinion, they should allow this Filipina domestic helper to have her permanent resident. She has been in the country and of course, she would want a better life. But sometimes other countries or people might abuse or beat the system in their favor. Domestic helpers might abuse this system and use it as a gateway for other jobs or to to cross to other countries for a better opportunity. In the end, it's the up to the Hong Kong officials to settle this debate.
