Tips on your first job in the Philippines

It's summer in the Philippines but unlike other countries " Spring Break" is just starting to take over. Are you a fresh graduate seeking your first job or do you intend to take a summer job to gain a little work experience?
I have been working for seven years but I can still remember my first job like it happened just yesterday. I am a business graduate so naturally I would intend to get my feet wet at any business firm. However, I was in Dubai when I started to seek out my first job. Unlike in the Philippines, you have a quite number of competition that you have to beat out in order to get your first job.
I was still 20 years old when I graduated, and I was very eager to start work! In Dubai, it's still hard to find a good job especially when you have a large number of expatriates already earning a living in the country or still trying their luck to find a stable job on their visit visa.
Unlike Dubai, Philippines has a large number of opportunities! We just need time, patience and understanding when trying to find a good job. But ever wonder what happens after you get the job? I would like to share a couple of tips on how to keep you grounded and have a well-balance lifestyle.
1) Don't get picky: Prove to your employer that you are willing to work and eager to to learn. We all want that dream job that we can get paid a truckload of cash on our first try but it doesn't work that way. It takes a little time and patience. Prove to your employer your loyalty, and your eagerness to work.
2) Earn and learn: It's nice to get your first pay check but remember! You should also learn the tricks of the trade in your working industry. There will always be competition. The truth is there will always be someone who wants your job. Learn the secrets of your job that will you make an asset instead of liability in the company.
3) Don't expect to earn a large salary on your job: You would be lucky if you get a big pay check! If you did, kudos to you! However, salary increase will take time. Do not expect to get a a salary increase every year since it depends on the your company's budget and future plans. Take your time and invest in your company. Take it slow and let your first job be a great learning experience. Your investment could also lead you to other future opportunities in the company. So take your time and don't forget to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Pacquiao vs Bradley 2 Rematch (April 13 - Philippine Time)

Who is excited for the Pacquiao vs Bradley 2 rematch? Well me for instance! This is a definitely a make-it or break-it for the "Pacman. Since Pacquiao is definitely is in the twilight of his career, I am really hoping for a knockout.
I doubt it will occur since the last knockout win for Pacquiao was against Cotto back in 2009. It's been a long time since we have least seen a knockout but I am hoping for some knockdown's in the process. It's great to see Pacquiao back in the Mecca of Boxing in Las Vegas. I have to admit that I miss the kind of noise that a Pacquiao match brings to the table. Lately, the noise died out since we haven't seen a knockdown in quite a long time.
I will be watching the Pacquiao vs Bradley 2 match on April 13 at 7am (Philippine Time). I will be sure to share my thoughts on the fight. Who do you think will win the match? It could go either way but I am still rooting for the "Pacman" since I believe he was robbed in his fight with Bradley.
This fight will be memorable for me since I will spending time with my dad who I haven't seen in many years since I arrived in the Philippines. It will be a father and son bonding moment but at the same time, we are going to enjoy the Pacquiao fight like it was our first Pacquiao back in Dubai. Have fun, guys!

My 1975 experience (The 1975 Live in Manila)

I have been a huge 1975 fan since I heard their song " Chocolate . I was such a huge fan that I even have the "The 1975 t-shirt" which I got from the UK. There are lot of great bands like HAIM and Arctic Monkeys. But I have to say that I got more than I bargained for when they performed in Manila for free!
They have such great songs like " Chocolate" and " Girls". But I have to say that my favorite songs are "Pressure" and "Settle Down". Nevertheless their album is one of the best albums that I heard in such a long time. When I met them for a " Meet and Greet", they were such great guys that they event took their time to take autographs and even gamely posed with their numerous fans from the Philippines.
I happen to meet a lot of great 1975 fans in the Philippines at the 1975 concert's. I even met a Vietnamese girl name Duong who flew all the way from Vietnam just to see them perform live! Now that's a true fan!

Money grabbing traffic enforcers in the Philippines!

Readers, please beware of the traffic enforcers. The traffic enforcers do not seem to be doing their job. As you know, MMDA has some controversy on which I just ignored and thought that this would never happen to me. They are known for taking money from drivers for violations on which they claimed that the driver has committed.
Well, on the night of Sunday of June 5, 2011, I was on my way home after a great day at Mall of Asia. Since I lived closed by, I decided to take a shortcut through Paranaque at the Airport road. I was going to take a left when all of sudden a traffic enforcer stopped me in the middle of the road. He took my car aside and started asking me for my driver's license. I kept apologizing to the man but it seems that this person seem to have a hard sense of hearing. I realized, why do I keep apologizing when I don't even know what I did wrong? When I asked on what was my traffic violation and he said that I beat the red light.
I was like WHAT!? I am not blind and I was sure that I did not beat the red light and passed a yellow light. A person who has a driver's license would know that once there is a yellow traffic, you can't stop in the middle of the road unless you pass the traffic light or your would risk being hit by other vehicles which are on the other side of the road. My biggest mistake was giving the traffic enforcer my driver license. He kept asking for my car registration. I knew that I did not commit a violation. Another a traffic enforcer came this time and started to explain on what was going on. At this time, I was not alone since I was with a friend at the time.
We were both confused.The traffic enforcers were rude and kept harassing us. I was like thinking that if this is how they treat tourists then they're giving a bad name to the Philippine tourist industry since I was close by the airport and hotels.I kept insisting that I did not doing anything wrong and I asked if there was another way to avoid a ticket. In the end, I did pay the guy off by P100. I figured that this was better then taking my license away since I did not want to be driving around Manila without a license.
I have seen news coverage especially on TV5 on how traffic enforcers in the Philippines are corrupt. I decided to ignore the issue and pay the traffic enforcer off. I decided that I should pay special attention to the traffic light and be careful in the future. It came sooner then I thought! I decided to stay for a awhile and I noticed that the traffic enforcers are just waiting at the corner and started stopping many drivers for the same violation that they claimed that I have done. In other words, this were their trap to catch more drivers. I counted three cars!
The next morning it was a Monday and I was on my way to work. I was coming from the Guadalupe road and was on my way to work. I passed the usual yellow light and again, two traffic enforcers stopped me in the middle of the road. I asked them on what was my traffic violation and they said I beat the red light. This time I was 100% sure that I did not beat the red light and I was infuriated! They kept insisting for my driver license. This so happens that my friend last night was with me again this morning since I was dropping her off to work.
It was broad daylight and I was sure of the traffic light. We both got mad. I did not expect this but she got off the car and started arguing. My friend couldn't take it anymore and said that we are not blind and we were sure that we did not break any traffic laws. She said to the traffic enforcers that we will not give you the driver license. Instead, we want your names and we will report you to the police. The moment she said this, the traffic enforcers changed their minds and decided to let us go. Traffic enforcers are just money grabbing people who like to prey on innocent drivers for their own benefit.
I would just like to give out three tips to all the drivers in the Philippines. If you are sure that you did not commit any traffic violation, please follow these tips!
1) Do not give your driver's license. (The moment you give your driver's license, it will be hard to take it away from them and they will try to take out more money from you)
2) Be aware of your license plates (Count how many enforcers are there since one of them could be distracting you and the other might be unscrewing your license plate. This is another way of harassing you for more money.)
3) If they threatened to give you a ticket or take your driver license away without any valid license. Just take their names and tell them that you will be reporting them to the police station. (This will you save you time and money. Of course, you have to be innocent so that you could prove your case against them =) ).

Here are some more updates. I uploaded my group picture with Poreotics at the Skydome, SM North Edsa. The picture turned pretty good! Its these moments that make me want to stay in the Philippines. I thought it was going to be another boring day at work. I was called upon and when I was told that I was going to see America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 Winners Poreotics, I just went crazy! I got my phone ready, laptop and headed off to SM North Edsa. I immediately thought of my friend, Rye Bonoan since he is a fan too but everyone told me to hurry up because we had a deadline. I had to hurry up and pack my stuff up. I was so excited that I just couldn't wait to go there. I got there and it was crowded!
A lot of fans were there. I got my shirt, my special meet and greet pass and the show began!. The show started off with some of the best local crews in the Philippines. The sponsors started giving out free tickets to the Justin Bieber concert. Finally, it was time. Poreotics came on to the stage and the place exploded! Poreotics members Matt (Dumbo) Nguyen, Can Nguyen, Charles Nguyen, Lawrence (Law) Devera, Justin (Jet Li) Valles and Chad Mayate. They were nice guys and hyped the crowd up with their antics and jokes. I thought to myself, that I wish my friend was here.
They called some people from the crowd to come to the stage to dance and decided to teach the fans on how to dance. Some of the Poreotics members are Filipino, so they spoke Tagalog very well. They taught the crowd the " Doggie" and the " Cat Daddy". It was fun! They dance better live with their unique "cutting" and "tutting" technique. They have some new dance moves along with famous dance steps from the ABDC.
Finally, when it was all over it was the meet and greet. I was so excited that I actually danced and popped right in front of them! Lawrence said, " Wow, that was pretty good, do it again." I did and they clapped. I just couldn't believe that they said, " That was amazing dude. I had group picture with them and it will be uploaded soon on to their Facebook page. I decided to go backstage and I asked Jet Li for a picture. Although, the guard was mean, Jet Li said," It's cool, I'll handle it and we took a picture". I said, " Thanks for the picture on which he replied back, " No problem, keep dancing and hope you enjoyed the show'.

Fast and the Furious 5 Event in Manila!

It was a hot day! The event for today was the Fast and Furious 5 car event show! Now I have been to many car shows like in Dubai, U.A.E and L.A, California. I am a big fan of Fast and the Furious franchise! Vin Diesel is an amazing actor. Fast and the Furious is known for displaying the street race culture in the US. Along with the street culture, it also displays the latest in car re modification. It was the Fast and the Furious franchise that put car re modification and street racing on the map! It became more fast famous due to its multicultural society, great soundtrack and of course good looking women!
I thought the Philippines would be a bore and it wouldn't have any of the same thrill like they had in the car shows in the US. Was I wrong! Filipinos are still creative. I guess its that Asian flavor that we all have and install it into our cars. The event was on April 30th, 2011 on a Saturday. I have to say it was a little hot so that means a lot of people came in their shorts, tank tops and shades. I was like wow! The music and scenario was intense! If your a car lover like me, then its a car lover dream come true.
I have to admit, one of the best parts of the event was the drift competition. I had the best view of the race and the drift competition was intense. All I could hear was the sound of the wheels screeching at every drift and the smoke coming out of the tires. The announcer kept the crowd on its feet with his brilliant social skills. Pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao is extremely upset about how people criticizes his grammar along with some fake Twitter accounts that claims that it's the boxing superstar mother Aling Dionisia. As a person, I make a lot of grammar mistakes when I type out a blog. Nobody is perfect! Manny Pacquiao is a boxer not an English teacher.
I'm proud that the Pacman actually has the time to talk to his fans! I can't name at least ten celebrities who would actually spend time with their fans. You still rule Manny!

Reunion at Alabang Town Center

I have to say, that when I arrived in the Philippines, I still had this Filipino Dubai mentality. Now you're asking, what is the Filipino Dubai mentality? The Filipino Dubai mentality is that in Dubai we Filipinos have the perception that everyone Filipino is your friend. Let me rephrase that. In Dubai, we Filipinos are more then friends, we're family and that's one of the reasons why I miss Dubai.
In the states and the Philippines, we just can't trust anyone we know. I have to admit that I was a bit naive and that a lot of people misused my trust, kindness and earnings. I just wanted to have fun so that they would know the real Kristian in me. Sadly, to that effect I have lost most of my earnings and in the end realize what a fool I was. I never realize that there were a lot of untrustworthy people in the Philippines. I have to say that shook my world.

It was then, that I found out that one of my good friends or should I say family from Dubai was in the Philippines. It was kind of ironic since I chatted with him through Facebook and found he was having the time of his life. I was like wow! How come I'm just having a bad experience in the Philippines while he's having the time of his life? I was all set and ready to go back to Arizona on July 2010.
It was on May 18, 2010 when me and my cousin went to Alabang Town Center where I met one of my good friends from Dubai named Rye. I was kind of shocked that he still remembered me and he was the first to notice me in the crowd. I was surprised by how tall he grew.
We reminisced about the good times in Dubai and what we were doing in the Philippines. We went around the area until we ended up in Molino, Cavite. It was nice talking to someone in English! I was like wow! I felt like I was back home in Dubai! We ended at my cousin's place, poured some good old Red Horse beer into our bodies, and from that day on, it was history. Why was it history? It's just the beginning of more legendary nights to come.

Life as a call center agent? It's different.

I never had any experience working as a call center agent and in the call center universe we were referred to as the "Call center virgins". In my opinion, I find that a degrading remark but to be fair I did not have a clue on what the call center industry was about. I was excited because I was wondering how the people are in a call center environment. I was excited on how to mingle with real Filipinos brought up from the motherland. I did have Filipino friends but they weren't culturally Filipino.
Being in a call center environment was challenging. As any job, we all had to go undergo training. The training lasted for two months on which I passed. I guess that English as my first language and experiencing life in the states gave me an advantage. It was no late November, 2009 when we were put on to full gear and I was with my team, Team Jojo. Now first of all, Jojo is one the nicest people you'll ever meet and one of the best team leaders I ever had! He's the kind of person that would understand you and kept the team like glue.
In the beginning, I had trouble coping up because I could not blend with nobody. It was hard since I was already culture shocked and I was feeling homesick at the same time. I just wanted to go home and be with my real family and friends. I was happy in the states and I did not understand why I had to visit the Philippines. But as time flew by, I started getting along with my team and started to get to know the people around me. They weren't bad at all! I have to say that I do miss my team, Jen, Ate Sol, Ate May to name a few. I had some great times there, and joined the HSBC Dance crew as Hypnotics.
The call center industry has it's pro's and con's. Pro's is that your earning more and in the process have a lot of benefits with a good company. The con's would be the night-shift hours that can make you sick often and it's unhealthy for the human body. It can get quite boring and to deal irate customers can be a pain. In either case, I was happy, and I did enjoy my time at HSBC, Alabang.

It was July 16, 2010 that I unexpectedly left Team Jojo and HSBC. I decided that I did not want to stay in a call industry forever and there was something special destined for me. It was hard at first but after a few days to myself, I decided it was time to leave HSBC. It's now or never. I never really had the time to say goodbye but I will cherish the memories that I had with Team Jojo. I wonder how they are? I hope they are doing well. I closed my final chapter with HSBC and opened up a new chapter in my life in the Philippines. Labels: Call Center, Job hunting, Philippines
Culture shocked, rocked and locked!

As I said from my earlier blog post that I am a Filipino. Physically I am a Filipino, culturally there's nothing Filipino about me. I had to adjust and get use to a lot of things that I was not use to. It was back to the drawing board for me and was I culture shocked to the bone!
I should say that the first thing that surprises me the most is being in a bathroom with no toilet seat. On top of that, there wasn't any toilet paper and I had to wash myself with a bar of soap called Safeguard and a bucket of water. I'm still not use to doing this! I wasn't use to the fact of not having a refreshing hot shower. I am still adjusting to using a pale of water to take a bath in and which I might add is very cold. In the Philippines, Filipinos have a mentality that cold water is clean but in the West, a person needs a hot shower to kill the germs in the body.

No point in complaining because I am facing a culture clash within. I am in the Philippines so I have to learn and do it the Filipino way. I did try some Filipino cuisines from the street vendors. They do have some funky names for the food. One of them was called Adidas (Not the shoe brand). I did have my first experience eating Balut. It was one of the experiences that I would never forget. I just thought it tasted unique. But when I was told that I was eating a raw baby chick, it just made me want to throw up! I just could not do that since I was in a public place and it would seem rude. I just smiled and complimented on good it tasted. I managed to survive that scenario. I did lose a log weight in the Philippines. I guess being in Philippines does have it's advantages. If you want to lose weight, then the Philippines is the place to be.
Transportation was a huge issue for me since I wanted to travel the Filipino way. In Dubai and Tempe, people had their own cars but if not we have subways, buses and a cab. In the Philippines, our main transportation was the tricycles, jeepneys, MRT, LRT, cabs and buses.

If a person wants to save money, I would recommend the transportation that I mentioned above. However, if it was up to me, I would use my own transportation. Why? They say if you could drive in the Philippines, you could drive anywhere in the world.
However, there is a downside to it. I personally recommend that you should get a driver. Why? The obstacles that I face while driving here is pollution, parking and traffic. I experienced driving through Manila with no signboards or decent street lights to assist me. I was wondering how could anyone ever drive in a place like this? My family and my friends just had one answer for moi. They said, " Kristian, Welcome to the Philippines."

Job hunting in the Philippines? Horrible!

Since I was stuck in the Philippines, I figured I have to do something worthwhile. If your a Filipino who grew up abroad, I guess we all have this mentality that we need to be our own person. I figured since I am a U.S graduate, I thought that being in a western university would give me an advantage and that means a good job with a high pay!. Boy! Was I excited!
Unfortunately it didn't turn the way I expected. Filipinos here are so patriotic and prefer to hire someone who has been to local universities like University of the Philippines and La Salle. I thought this was unfair but this is the reality that I am facing. I took it as a challenge and it sure was a challenge!
I applied through newspapers Manila Bulletin, Tabloids, Star newspaper to name a few. I also signed up at job hunting websites like Jobstreet.com and JobsDB.com. I have to say it was a horrible experience and I have to admit that I was frustrated. Soon all my frustrations came on to me and I thought that my credentials were never good enough for anyone. My own country wouldn't accept me!

I decided job hunt on foot. I soon ended up at Northgate, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. I started looking for a job and I got accepted by Convergy's and HSBC, Alabang. I had the difficult decision of choosing the right job for me. It was a difficult decision since I have to decide a good career path which would lead me to success. In the end, I took the job as a call center agent as a Process Credit Executive at HSBC on September 22, 2009. It's summer in the Philippines but unlike other countries " Spring Break" is just starting to take over. Are you a fresh graduate seeking your first job or do you intend to take a summer job to gain a little work experience?
I have been working for seven years but I can still remember my first job like it happened just yesterday. I am a business graduate so naturally I would intend to get my feet wet at any business firm. However, I was in Dubai when I started to seek out my first job. Unlike in the Philippines, you have a quite number of competition that you have to beat out in order to get your first job.
I was still 20 years old when I graduated, and I was very eager to start work! In Dubai, it's still hard to find a good job especially when you have a large number of expatriates already earning a living in the country or still trying their luck to find a stable job on their visit visa.
Unlike Dubai, Philippines has a large number of opportunities! We just need time, patience and understanding when trying to find a good job. But ever wonder what happens after you get the job? I would like to share a couple of tips on how to keep you grounded and have a well-balance lifestyle.
1) Don't get picky: Prove to your employer that you are willing to work and eager to to learn. We all want that dream job that we can get paid a truckload of cash on our first try but it doesn't work that way. It takes a little time and patience. Prove to your employer your loyalty, and your eagerness to work.
2) Earn and learn: It's nice to get your first pay check but remember! You should also learn the tricks of the trade in your working industry. There will always be competition. The truth is there will always be someone who wants your job. Learn the secrets of your job that will you make an asset instead of liability in the company.
3) Don't expect to earn a large salary on your job: You would be lucky if you get a big pay check! If you did, kudos to you! However, salary increase will take time. Do not expect to get a a salary increase every year since it depends on the your company's budget and future plans. Take your time and invest in your company. Take it slow and let your first job be a great learning experience. Your investment could also lead you to other future opportunities in the company. So take your time and don't forget to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Who is excited for the Pacquiao vs Bradley 2 rematch? Well me for instance! This is a definitely a make-it or break-it for the "Pacman. Since Pacquiao is definitely is in the twilight of his career, I am really hoping for a knockout.
I doubt it will occur since the last knockout win for Pacquiao was against Cotto back in 2009. It's been a long time since we have least seen a knockout but I am hoping for some knockdown's in the process. It's great to see Pacquiao back in the Mecca of Boxing in Las Vegas. I have to admit that I miss the kind of noise that a Pacquiao match brings to the table. Lately, the noise died out since we haven't seen a knockdown in quite a long time.
I will be watching the Pacquiao vs Bradley 2 match on April 13 at 7am (Philippine Time). I will be sure to share my thoughts on the fight. Who do you think will win the match? It could go either way but I am still rooting for the "Pacman" since I believe he was robbed in his fight with Bradley.
This fight will be memorable for me since I will spending time with my dad who I haven't seen in many years since I arrived in the Philippines. It will be a father and son bonding moment but at the same time, we are going to enjoy the Pacquiao fight like it was our first Pacquiao back in Dubai. Have fun, guys!

I have been a huge 1975 fan since I heard their song " Chocolate . I was such a huge fan that I even have the "The 1975 t-shirt" which I got from the UK. There are lot of great bands like HAIM and Arctic Monkeys. But I have to say that I got more than I bargained for when they performed in Manila for free!
They have such great songs like " Chocolate" and " Girls". But I have to say that my favorite songs are "Pressure" and "Settle Down". Nevertheless their album is one of the best albums that I heard in such a long time. When I met them for a " Meet and Greet", they were such great guys that they event took their time to take autographs and even gamely posed with their numerous fans from the Philippines.
I happen to meet a lot of great 1975 fans in the Philippines at the 1975 concert's. I even met a Vietnamese girl name Duong who flew all the way from Vietnam just to see them perform live! Now that's a true fan!

Money grabbing traffic enforcers in the Philippines!

Readers, please beware of the traffic enforcers. The traffic enforcers do not seem to be doing their job. As you know, MMDA has some controversy on which I just ignored and thought that this would never happen to me. They are known for taking money from drivers for violations on which they claimed that the driver has committed.
Well, on the night of Sunday of June 5, 2011, I was on my way home after a great day at Mall of Asia. Since I lived closed by, I decided to take a shortcut through Paranaque at the Airport road. I was going to take a left when all of sudden a traffic enforcer stopped me in the middle of the road. He took my car aside and started asking me for my driver's license. I kept apologizing to the man but it seems that this person seem to have a hard sense of hearing. I realized, why do I keep apologizing when I don't even know what I did wrong? When I asked on what was my traffic violation and he said that I beat the red light.
I was like WHAT!? I am not blind and I was sure that I did not beat the red light and passed a yellow light. A person who has a driver's license would know that once there is a yellow traffic, you can't stop in the middle of the road unless you pass the traffic light or your would risk being hit by other vehicles which are on the other side of the road. My biggest mistake was giving the traffic enforcer my driver license. He kept asking for my car registration. I knew that I did not commit a violation. Another a traffic enforcer came this time and started to explain on what was going on. At this time, I was not alone since I was with a friend at the time.
We were both confused.The traffic enforcers were rude and kept harassing us. I was like thinking that if this is how they treat tourists then they're giving a bad name to the Philippine tourist industry since I was close by the airport and hotels.I kept insisting that I did not doing anything wrong and I asked if there was another way to avoid a ticket. In the end, I did pay the guy off by P100. I figured that this was better then taking my license away since I did not want to be driving around Manila without a license.
I have seen news coverage especially on TV5 on how traffic enforcers in the Philippines are corrupt. I decided to ignore the issue and pay the traffic enforcer off. I decided that I should pay special attention to the traffic light and be careful in the future. It came sooner then I thought! I decided to stay for a awhile and I noticed that the traffic enforcers are just waiting at the corner and started stopping many drivers for the same violation that they claimed that I have done. In other words, this were their trap to catch more drivers. I counted three cars!
The next morning it was a Monday and I was on my way to work. I was coming from the Guadalupe road and was on my way to work. I passed the usual yellow light and again, two traffic enforcers stopped me in the middle of the road. I asked them on what was my traffic violation and they said I beat the red light. This time I was 100% sure that I did not beat the red light and I was infuriated! They kept insisting for my driver license. This so happens that my friend last night was with me again this morning since I was dropping her off to work.
It was broad daylight and I was sure of the traffic light. We both got mad. I did not expect this but she got off the car and started arguing. My friend couldn't take it anymore and said that we are not blind and we were sure that we did not break any traffic laws. She said to the traffic enforcers that we will not give you the driver license. Instead, we want your names and we will report you to the police. The moment she said this, the traffic enforcers changed their minds and decided to let us go. Traffic enforcers are just money grabbing people who like to prey on innocent drivers for their own benefit.
I would just like to give out three tips to all the drivers in the Philippines. If you are sure that you did not commit any traffic violation, please follow these tips!
1) Do not give your driver's license. (The moment you give your driver's license, it will be hard to take it away from them and they will try to take out more money from you)
2) Be aware of your license plates (Count how many enforcers are there since one of them could be distracting you and the other might be unscrewing your license plate. This is another way of harassing you for more money.)
3) If they threatened to give you a ticket or take your driver license away without any valid license. Just take their names and tell them that you will be reporting them to the police station. (This will you save you time and money. Of course, you have to be innocent so that you could prove your case against them =) ).

I thought it was going to be another boring day at work. I was called upon and when I was told that I was going to see America's Best Dance Crew Season 5 Winners Poreotics, I just went crazy! I got my phone ready, laptop and headed off to SM North Edsa. I immediately thought of my friend, Rye Bonoan since he is a fan too but everyone told me to hurry up because we had a deadline. I had to hurry up and pack my stuff up. I was so excited that I just couldn't wait to go there. I got there and it was crowded!
A lot of fans were there. I got my shirt, my special meet and greet pass and the show began!. The show started off with some of the best local crews in the Philippines. The sponsors started giving out free tickets to the Justin Bieber concert. Finally, it was time. Poreotics came on to the stage and the place exploded! Poreotics members Matt (Dumbo) Nguyen, Can Nguyen, Charles Nguyen, Lawrence (Law) Devera, Justin (Jet Li) Valles and Chad Mayate. They were nice guys and hyped the crowd up with their antics and jokes. I thought to myself, that I wish my friend was here.
They called some people from the crowd to come to the stage to dance and decided to teach the fans on how to dance. Some of the Poreotics members are Filipino, so they spoke Tagalog very well. They taught the crowd the " Doggie" and the " Cat Daddy". It was fun! They dance better live with their unique "cutting" and "tutting" technique. They have some new dance moves along with famous dance steps from the ABDC.
Finally, when it was all over it was the meet and greet. I was so excited that I actually danced and popped right in front of them! Lawrence said, " Wow, that was pretty good, do it again." I did and they clapped. I just couldn't believe that they said, " That was amazing dude. I had group picture with them and it will be uploaded soon on to their Facebook page. I decided to go backstage and I asked Jet Li for a picture. Although, the guard was mean, Jet Li said," It's cool, I'll handle it and we took a picture". I said, " Thanks for the picture on which he replied back, " No problem, keep dancing and hope you enjoyed the show'.

Fast and the Furious 5 Event in Manila!

It was a hot day! The event for today was the Fast and Furious 5 car event show! Now I have been to many car shows like in Dubai, U.A.E and L.A, California. I am a big fan of Fast and the Furious franchise! Vin Diesel is an amazing actor. Fast and the Furious is known for displaying the street race culture in the US. Along with the street culture, it also displays the latest in car re modification. It was the Fast and the Furious franchise that put car re modification and street racing on the map! It became more fast famous due to its multicultural society, great soundtrack and of course good looking women!
I thought the Philippines would be a bore and it wouldn't have any of the same thrill like they had in the car shows in the US. Was I wrong! Filipinos are still creative. I guess its that Asian flavor that we all have and install it into our cars. The event was on April 30th, 2011 on a Saturday. I have to say it was a little hot so that means a lot of people came in their shorts, tank tops and shades. I was like wow! The music and scenario was intense! If your a car lover like me, then its a car lover dream come true.
I have to admit, one of the best parts of the event was the drift competition. I had the best view of the race and the drift competition was intense. All I could hear was the sound of the wheels screeching at every drift and the smoke coming out of the tires. The announcer kept the crowd on its feet with his brilliant social skills. Pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao is extremely upset about how people criticizes his grammar along with some fake Twitter accounts that claims that it's the boxing superstar mother Aling Dionisia. As a person, I make a lot of grammar mistakes when I type out a blog. Nobody is perfect! Manny Pacquiao is a boxer not an English teacher.
I'm proud that the Pacman actually has the time to talk to his fans! I can't name at least ten celebrities who would actually spend time with their fans. You still rule Manny!

Reunion at Alabang Town Center

I have to say, that when I arrived in the Philippines, I still had this Filipino Dubai mentality. Now you're asking, what is the Filipino Dubai mentality? The Filipino Dubai mentality is that in Dubai we Filipinos have the perception that everyone Filipino is your friend. Let me rephrase that. In Dubai, we Filipinos are more then friends, we're family and that's one of the reasons why I miss Dubai.
In the states and the Philippines, we just can't trust anyone we know. I have to admit that I was a bit naive and that a lot of people misused my trust, kindness and earnings. I just wanted to have fun so that they would know the real Kristian in me. Sadly, to that effect I have lost most of my earnings and in the end realize what a fool I was. I never realize that there were a lot of untrustworthy people in the Philippines. I have to say that shook my world.

It was then, that I found out that one of my good friends or should I say family from Dubai was in the Philippines. It was kind of ironic since I chatted with him through Facebook and found he was having the time of his life. I was like wow! How come I'm just having a bad experience in the Philippines while he's having the time of his life? I was all set and ready to go back to Arizona on July 2010.
It was on May 18, 2010 when me and my cousin went to Alabang Town Center where I met one of my good friends from Dubai named Rye. I was kind of shocked that he still remembered me and he was the first to notice me in the crowd. I was surprised by how tall he grew.
We reminisced about the good times in Dubai and what we were doing in the Philippines. We went around the area until we ended up in Molino, Cavite. It was nice talking to someone in English! I was like wow! I felt like I was back home in Dubai! We ended at my cousin's place, poured some good old Red Horse beer into our bodies, and from that day on, it was history. Why was it history? It's just the beginning of more legendary nights to come.

Life as a call center agent? It's different.

I never had any experience working as a call center agent and in the call center universe we were referred to as the "Call center virgins". In my opinion, I find that a degrading remark but to be fair I did not have a clue on what the call center industry was about. I was excited because I was wondering how the people are in a call center environment. I was excited on how to mingle with real Filipinos brought up from the motherland. I did have Filipino friends but they weren't culturally Filipino.
Being in a call center environment was challenging. As any job, we all had to go undergo training. The training lasted for two months on which I passed. I guess that English as my first language and experiencing life in the states gave me an advantage. It was no late November, 2009 when we were put on to full gear and I was with my team, Team Jojo. Now first of all, Jojo is one the nicest people you'll ever meet and one of the best team leaders I ever had! He's the kind of person that would understand you and kept the team like glue.
In the beginning, I had trouble coping up because I could not blend with nobody. It was hard since I was already culture shocked and I was feeling homesick at the same time. I just wanted to go home and be with my real family and friends. I was happy in the states and I did not understand why I had to visit the Philippines. But as time flew by, I started getting along with my team and started to get to know the people around me. They weren't bad at all! I have to say that I do miss my team, Jen, Ate Sol, Ate May to name a few. I had some great times there, and joined the HSBC Dance crew as Hypnotics.
The call center industry has it's pro's and con's. Pro's is that your earning more and in the process have a lot of benefits with a good company. The con's would be the night-shift hours that can make you sick often and it's unhealthy for the human body. It can get quite boring and to deal irate customers can be a pain. In either case, I was happy, and I did enjoy my time at HSBC, Alabang.

It was July 16, 2010 that I unexpectedly left Team Jojo and HSBC. I decided that I did not want to stay in a call industry forever and there was something special destined for me. It was hard at first but after a few days to myself, I decided it was time to leave HSBC. It's now or never. I never really had the time to say goodbye but I will cherish the memories that I had with Team Jojo. I wonder how they are? I hope they are doing well. Culture shocked, rocked and locked!

As I said from my earlier blog post that I am a Filipino. Physically I am a Filipino, culturally there's nothing Filipino about me. I had to adjust and get use to a lot of things that I was not use to. It was back to the drawing board for me and was I culture shocked to the bone!
I should say that the first thing that surprises me the most is being in a bathroom with no toilet seat. On top of that, there wasn't any toilet paper and I had to wash myself with a bar of soap called Safeguard and a bucket of water. I'm still not use to doing this! I wasn't use to the fact of not having a refreshing hot shower. I am still adjusting to using a pale of water to take a bath in and which I might add is very cold. In the Philippines, Filipinos have a mentality that cold water is clean but in the West, a person needs a hot shower to kill the germs in the body.

No point in complaining because I am facing a culture clash within. I am in the Philippines so I have to learn and do it the Filipino way. I did try some Filipino cuisines from the street vendors. They do have some funky names for the food. One of them was called Adidas (Not the shoe brand). I did have my first experience eating Balut. It was one of the experiences that I would never forget. I just thought it tasted unique. But when I was told that I was eating a raw baby chick, it just made me want to throw up! I just could not do that since I was in a public place and it would seem rude. I just smiled and complimented on good it tasted. I managed to survive that scenario. I did lose a log weight in the Philippines. I guess being in Philippines does have it's advantages. If you want to lose weight, then the Philippines is the place to be.
Transportation was a huge issue for me since I wanted to travel the Filipino way. In Dubai and Tempe, people had their own cars but if not we have subways, buses and a cab. In the Philippines, our main transportation was the tricycles, jeepneys, MRT, LRT, cabs and buses.

If a person wants to save money, I would recommend the transportation that I mentioned above. However, if it was up to me, I would use my own transportation. Why? They say if you could drive in the Philippines, you could drive anywhere in the world.
However, there is a downside to it. I personally recommend that you should get a driver. Why? The obstacles that I face while driving here is pollution, parking and traffic. I experienced driving through Manila with no signboards or decent street lights to assist me. I was wondering how could anyone ever drive in a place like this? Job hunting in the Philippines? Horrible!

Since I was stuck in the Philippines, I figured I have to do something worthwhile. If your a Filipino who grew up abroad, I guess we all have this mentality that we need to be our own person. I figured since I am a U.S graduate, I thought that being in a western university would give me an advantage and that means a good job with a high pay!. Boy! Was I excited!
Unfortunately it didn't turn the way I expected. Filipinos here are so patriotic and prefer to hire someone who has been to local universities like University of the Philippines and La Salle. I thought this was unfair but this is the reality that I am facing. I took it as a challenge and it sure was a challenge!
I applied through newspapers Manila Bulletin, Tabloids, Star newspaper to name a few. I also signed up at job hunting websites like Jobstreet.com and JobsDB.com. I have to say it was a horrible experience and I have to admit that I was frustrated. Soon all my frustrations came on to me and I thought that my credentials were never good enough for anyone. My own country wouldn't accept me!

I decided job hunt on foot. I soon ended up at Northgate, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. I started looking for a job and I got accepted by Convergy's and HSBC, Alabang. I had the difficult decision of choosing the right job for me. It was a difficult decision since I have to decide a good career path which would lead me to success. In the end, I took the job as a call center agent as a Process Credit Executive at HSBC on September 22, 2009. Hi! You may call me Stuck in the Philippines because I am literally stuck in the Philippines! I'm just kidding. My name is Kristian. This is my first blog and it first started out as travel blog. But then I started involving my love for the entertainment scene mainly the movies and concerts scene. Once I started blogging, I couldn't stop.
A little bit about myself. I was born and raised in Dubai (U.A.E) until I went to Arizona (U.SA). You could say I love traveling. For the record, I am a Filipino. I just lived and studied abroad. A graduate of Southern New Hampshire University and Maine High School graduate, I feel that life has more to offer. I'm a Business Administration graduate but this is something I feel that I am passionate about. I love to breakdance but I'm not getting any younger. I like traveling but that requires a lot of cash. But I love to explore.
Since I love traveling, I first started this blog as a travel blog and I was bored. Anyway, once I arrived in the Philippines, I decided to stay for awhile and adapt to the Filipino way of life. Trust me! It wasn't easy since I had to adjust from scratch! But everything turned out well.
How I started blogging? It was when a friend suggested that I should blog. My first thought of blogging is that it was a boring job and besides what do I blog about? Voila! That's how my blogging world began and now I'm hooked! Now I mainly blog about events, news, movies, concerts and travel! A lot huh? By the way, I do make some grammar mistakes on my blog but hey nobody is perfect! =)
